Sept. 16 (Bloomberg) -- A Florida resident was charged by U.S. prosecutors with aiding terrorists by raising money and recruiting terrorists for violent acts around the globe, the Justice Department said in Washington.
A federal grand jury in Miami charged Adham Amin Hassoun, already in custody in Florida, and Mohamed Hesham Youssef, being held in Egypt, with conspiring to materially support terrorism.
The two are accused of sending coded messages between 1996 and 2000 suggesting participation in a violent jihad in Somalia, Kosovo, Chechnya, and Afghanistan, the Justice Department said.
Hassoun, a Palestinian, has already been charged with lying to federal investigators investigating alleged terrorist recruitment and making false statements to a U.S. immigration judge. The earlier charges include illegal possession of a firearm.
The two face a maximum sentence of 15 years imprisonment on the charge of conspiring to help terrorists.

As U.S. influence in the Gulf has waned, Iraqís relative influence as an
oil supplier to U.S. and world markets has increased:
Iraq is now the fastest growing oil supplier to the United States, selling 850,000 barrels of crude oil a day to the United States in June (latest month available) or over seven percent of total imports.

As spare production capacity becomes tighter, Iraq is moving into a
position to become an important swing producer, with an ability to single handedly impact and manipulate global markets.

Perhaps most ominously, Saddam Hussein is threatening to cut back
production and is again claiming that Kuwait is stealing Iraqís oil the same
claim Iraq made in 1990.

Major-General Eric Olson heads the task force that oversees the 18,000 combat
troops that form the US-led Operation Enduring Freedom. He said this increase in
activity has been misunderstood by much of the international press. "It's been
translated as a deteriorating security environment, and it's not that at all.
Coalition forces have been much more active, they've been out much more than
they have in the past, we've been initiating engagements more than we have in
the past, I think the security environment is actually improving. The
engagements you're hearing about are engagements that we're initiating and
terminating on our terms. As opposed to being attacked, we're out there
conducting offensive operations," Olson said.
The North Atlantic Treaty
Organization's top general, James Jones - himself a US marine - told troops at
Camp Salerno that a large-scale threat from the Taliban and al-Qaeda had been
virtually eliminated. At the same time, both officials cautioned that this does
not mean either organization has lost the ability to cause massive damage.

But a Taliban representative said the Afghans had sent an emissary to the United
States asking how to deal with bin Laden without seeming to double-cross him,
and had asked Saudi Arabia if it would take care of his wives and children.
Most of the Taliban officials and the three senior American officials who
discussed the situation demanded anonymity, but all gave similar accounts of the
breach between bin Laden and the Taliban.

On Feb. 10, they said, bin
Laden's bodyguards became furious when a group of 10 or more Taliban officers
tried to replace them. By one account, automatic weapons were fired.

After the fight, "bin Laden found himself in a confined and difficult
situation," said Mujahid, the Taliban's representative-designate at the United
Nations.

Three days later, the Taliban leadership formally replaced bin
Laden's bodyguards with members of their intelligence service and foreign
ministry, instructing their men to keep bin Laden from public view, the
officials said.

The fight broke out over the degree of control the
Taliban would have over bin Laden, another Taliban representative said.

It came a week after Karl F. Inderfurth, an Assistant Secretary of
State, met in Pakistan with Jalil Akhund, the Taliban's deputy foreign minister,
and repeated American demands to turn over bin Laden.

The Taliban,
citing Islamic law and Afghan custom, say they cannot expel him.

"The
situation is a puzzle for the Afghan leadership," Mujahid said. "In World War
II, we couldn't hand over German citizens living in Afghanistan to the Allied
forces. Regarding Osama bin Laden, if we would do something in this regard, it
is totally against the Afghan character." bin Laden is considered a hero in
Afghanistan for his financial and military support of the Afghan rebels, who
defeated Soviet invaders in the 1980's.

"On the other side," said
Mujahid, "his presence is not a benefit to the people of Afghanistan."

The Taliban, a radical Islamic movement with few friends among nations,
desperately wants international recognition and foreign aid. It will receive
little while it shelters bin Laden.

Though mutual mistrust complicates
any cooperation, and some senior American intelligence officials are not
convinced that the Taliban will ever betray bin Laden, the Taliban's leaders
have at least three ways to deal with him that would be acceptable to the United
States, senior American officials said.

They could arrange secretly for
members of another nation's intelligence service to learn of his whereabouts in
Afghanistan.

They could deliver him discreetly to a neighboring country,
where American law-enforcement and intelligence officers could try to apprehend
him.

Or they could keep bin Laden incommunicado in the hope that he
might fade as a source of anti-American terrorism.

Some American
officials think this last solution the best, since it holds no risk of making
bin Laden a martyr, which could inspire fresh attacks against the United States
from his followers.

The Pakistani source also adds that the Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh saga is far from
over - even with a verdict of death by hanging. Saeed - who was sentenced on
Monday for his part in the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter
Daniel Pearl in January - was tried in a secret Pakistani court in the bunker
basement of Hyderabad prison, far away from Karachi. Everybody involved -
especially the judges - feared a terrorist attack. Daniel Pearl's body was never
positively identified. The DNA analysis of the remains was sent to Pakistani and
American labs. The result was kept top secret.
Moshi Imam, Saeed's lawyer,
said that his client was condemned to death by hanging only because "Pakistan
wanted to appease the US". He is appealing the verdict, a process that could
take many years. The US wanted Saeed extradited because the CIA badly wanted to
know about his ties with al-Qaeda. Pakistan firmly denied the request. Why? The
Pakistani source is adamant: "Saeed would tell the Americans everything about
the compromising links between al-Qaeda and the ISI [Inter-Services
Intelligence.]"

LONDON: The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) worked in tandem with Pakistan to create the "monster" that is today Afghanistan's ruling Taliban, a leading
US expert on South Asia said here. "I warned them that we were creating a
monster," Selig Harrison from the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for
Scholars said at the conference here last week on "Terrorism and Regional
Security: Managing the Challenges in Asia."

Harrison said: "The CIA made a historic mistake in encouraging Islamic groups from all over the world to come to Afghanistan." The US provided $3 billion for building up these Islamic groups, and it accepted Pakistan's demand that they should
decide how this money should be spent, Harrison said.

Harrison, who spoke before the Taliban assault on the Buddha statues was launched, told the gathering of security experts that he had meetings with CIA leaders at
the time when Islamic forces were being strengthened in Afghanistan. "They
told me these people were fanatical, and the more fierce they were the more
fiercely they would fight the Soviets," he said. "I warned them that we were
creating a monster."

Harrison, who has written five books on Asian affairs and US relations with Asia, has had extensive contact with the CIA and political leaders in South Asia. Harrison was
a senior associate of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace between
1974 and 1996.

Get Osama bin Laden

On August 22, 2001, Asia Times Online reported Get Osama! Now! Or else ...
On September 9, the legendary "Lion of the Panjshir", Ahmed Shah Masoud, the
key Northern Alliance commander, was assassinated by two suicide bombers posing
as journalists in his base in northern Afghanistan. The Northern Alliance tells
Washington that the ISI may be involved. Masoud himself had told this
correspondent, two weeks before he was killed, of the incestuous link between
bin Laden and al-Qaeda, the Taliban and the ISI. A 2002 Asia Times Online
investigation would later establish that Masoud was killed as a gift from
al-Qaeda to the Taliban, with heavy involvement by Abdul Sayyaf, an Afghan
mujahideen commander very close to the ISI and the Saudis. From Washington's
perspective, this was also a gift. Masoud was the crucial Afghan nationalist
leader, supported by Russia and Iran; after the Taliban being smashed he would
never have accepted a feeble, US-sponsored, Hamid Karzai-style government.

On September 10, the Pakistani daily The News reported that the Mahmoud
visit to the United States "triggered speculation about the agenda of his
mysterious meetings at the Pentagon and National Security Council". If he'd been
to the National Security Council, he had certainly met Rice. Mahmoud did meet
with his counterpart, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director George Tenet.
Tenet and Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage had been in Islamabad in
May, when Tenet had "unusually long" meetings with Musharraf. Armitage for his
part has countless friends in the Pakistani military and the ISI. Mahmoud also
met a number of high officials at the White House and the Pentagon and had a
crucial meeting with Marc Grossman, the under secretary of state for political
affairs. Rice maintains she did not meet Mahmoud then.

On the morning of
September 11, Mahmoud was having a breakfast meeting at the Capitol with Graham and Goss. Goss spent as many as 10 years working on numerous CIA clandestine operations. He is very close to Vice President Dick Cheney. It's interesting to note that two weeks ago Goss suggested to the Justice Department to bring perjury charges against the new Cheney nemesis, Clarke. As it is widely known, Graham and Goss were co-heads of the joint House-Senate investigation that proclaimed there was "no smoking gun" as far as President George W Bush having
any advance knowledge of September 11.

According to the Washington Post,
and also to sources in Islamabad, the Mahmoud-Graham-Goss meeting lasted until
the second plane hit Tower 2 of the World Trade Center. Graham later said they
were talking about terrorism coming from Afghanistan, which means they were
talking about bin Laden.

Pakistani intelligence sources told Asia Times Online that on the afternoon of September 11 itself, as well as on September 12 and 13, Armitage met with Mahmoud with a stark choice: either Pakistan would help the US against al-Qaeda, or it would be bombed back to the Stone Age. Secretary of State Colin Powell presented an ultimatum in the form of seven US demands. Pakistan accepted all of them. One of the demands was for Musharraf to send Mahmoud to Kandahar again and force the Taliban to extradite bin Laden. Mahmoud knew in advance Mullah Omar would refuse. But when he went to Kandahar the Taliban leader said he would accept, as long as the Americans proved bin Laden was responsible for September 11. There was no proof, and Afghanistan was bombed anyway, a policy already decided well in advance.

It's important
to remember than on September 13 Islamabad airport was shut down - allegedly
because of threats against Pakistan's strategic assets. On September 14,
Islamabad declared total support for the US: the airport was immediately
reopened. Mahmoud remained in Washington until September 16 - when the war on
Afghanistan was more than programmed, and Pakistan was firmly in the "with us"
and not the "against us" column.

Million-dollar questions remain. Did Mahmoud know when and how the attacks of September 11 would happen? Did Musharraf know? Could the Bush administration have prevented September 11? It's hard to believe high echelons of the CIA and FBI were not aware of the direct link between the ISI and alleged chief hijacker Mohammed Atta.

On October 7, Mahmoud was demoted from the ISI. By that time, Washington obviously knew of the connection between Mahmoud, Saeed Sheikh and Mohamed Atta: the FBI knew it. The official version is that Mahmoud was sacrificed because he was too close to the Taliban - which, it is never enough to remind, are a cherished
creature of the ISI. Two other ISI big shots, Lieutenant-General Mohammed Aziz
Khan and Chief of General Staff Mohammed Yousouf, are also demoted along with
Mahmoud. Saeed Sheikh was under orders to Khan.

The fact remains that even with this Musharraf-conducted purge of the ISI elite, the bulk of ISI officers remained, and still are, pro-Taliban. Other former ISI directors living in Pakistan, such as the colorful, outspoken Lieutenant-General Hamid Gul, did not "disappear" and always renew their support for the Taliban. But as Asia
Times Online has reported, Mahmoud did disappear. He lives in near seclusion in
Rawalpindi. And he is definitely not talking. Graham and Goss may not be
interested in talking to him either. Because he may be the ultimate September 11
smoking gun.

Conclusion
The Karl Rove-designed campaign to re-elect Bush is in essence anchored on September 11. The Republican convention in New York will happen in the first week of September. Bush's speech will be on September 2 - to force the connection with the three-year commemoration of September 11.

This whole affair is not about whether Clarke committed "perjury"; whether Rice was really up to her job; or whether George W Bush knew something and then "forgot" about it. The families of September 11 victims, US public opinion, the demonized Islamic world, the whole world for that matter, all everybody wants to know is what really happened on September 11. The only party that does not seem interested in getting to the bottom of it is the Bush administration. The official fable of 19 kamikaze Arabs turning Boeings into missiles with military precision, armed only with box cutters and a few flight lessons and directed from an Afghan cave by a satellite phone-shy bin Laden simply does not hold. The commission is not asking the really hard questions. Here are just a few - and they are far from being the most embarrassing.

The "stand down" order: Why, despite more than an hour's warning
that an attack was happening, were no F-16s protecting US airspace? Documents
easily available online reveal why the Pentagon could not act: because of
bureaucracy. Why did the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) claim it took 25 minutes after the transponder was shut down to learn that Flight 11 - which hit World Trade Center Tower 1 - was hijacked? Why did fighters not take
off from Andrews Air Force base just outside Washington to protect the Pentagon?

The pre-September 11 suspicious stock option trades in American Airlines
and United Airlines were never fully investigated. Who profited?

What happened to the FBI investigation into flight schools - when it was proved that
at least five of the 19 hijackers were trained in US military schools?

Why did Bush keep reading a pet-goat story for more than half an hour after the first WTC hit, and 15 minutes after Chief of Staff Andrew Card told him there had been an attack?

What really happened to Flight 93? An Associated Press story last August quoting a congressional report said the FBI suspected the plane was crashed on purpose. The FBI has a flight-simulation video of what happened: the video - as well as the black box - remain top secret. And as far as four "indestructible" black boxes are concerned, how come none were found, unlike Mohammed Atta's intact passport lying in the WTC rubble?

Why have no scientific experts examined the physical and mathematical
evidence that a Boeing 757 could not have possibly "disappeared" without a trace
after hitting the Pentagon? For the most exhaustive and practically
incontrovertible analysis available on the net, see this report.

What remains of the very tight 1980s bin Laden-ISI-CIA connection? How much did the CIA know about what the ISI was up to? And how much did the ISI know about what al-Qaeda was up to?

What does Rice really know about the very close relations between Mahmoud and the top echelons of the Bush administration?

I think what I have failed to give you the jury is motive. I've been blogging since March or so of last year all about 9-11. No one seems to understand the big lie. You have to break it down by the cover story. The first thing I think you have to give people is MOTIVE! OIL AND DOPE. The big lie got us into Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, but the move started way back with the Balkans. The plan is for a "greater middle east" get it? A world war? NEW WORLD ORDER ... with America as the sole Super Power. Look deeper into the eyes of men like Ashcroft, Bush, Falwell, Leiberman, Perle, Wolfowitz, Cheney ad nauseum and you see a Holy War, JIHAD! The end of History, they are pulling it off right before your very eyes. Sorry to sound like a paranoid, but, there you have it.

The towers are interesting for one reason, at least to me, 10.4 seconds for both means a free fall, no pancake. Also, there are first hand accounts of a 50 ton hydraulic press in the sub basement of the towers being completly blown to bits, so I believe there were explosions. Also, the firefighters report only spot fires on the 78th floor before the collapse. Proof positive kerosene did not cause steel to melt, twice.

Remember the Cheney PNAC plan is for multi theater war. We are already fighting proxy wars in Sudan and Colombia. Stinger missiles, heat seaking, can take out a helicoptor, or a tank. The conclusions of the G8 summit in Sea Island and the recent NATO summit in Ankara detail the Wall Street plan of attack. You can vote, but, not against this plan for a "greater" Middle East.

As North and South Korea move toward peace we will have to have some reason to keep a major force there.

The Geography has not changed. The cops in this game have been directing traffic as far back as the Dutch East India Company. Shipping. The Silk Road. This is even born out by military thinkers like Boyd. Faith based decision making does not work in battle. If we have a pragmatic plan for war that relies on firm objectives to achieve a legitimate goal ... I'm not seeing that ... are you?

We have to have legitimacy to our core. We have to have a clear voice for change. Disarm, teach tolerance, share song, food, music, and build a sustainable future together for the children. Help people raise their young and purify the land.

No doubt Bush will hold Afghanistan up as an example of his military success or wants to, but, as I've been reporting it doesn't seem as though the US has wanted to capture OBL. So far they have let him escape from Sudan to Afghanistan, visited him in a hospital in Dubai, and, let him escape from Tora Bora into Iran or Pakistan. "

Will the capture of OBl make a more stable region, hell no! Either way smoking Bin Laden out of Pakistan or Iran means special forces in, an escalation of the war. Plus bin Laden is still a hero in in parts of Pakistan where the jihadi movement is strong. Only the Lord knows how a US incursion into Iran would play out:

A leading source says that shortly before the collapse of Kandahar, Mullah Omar called a meeting in the town at which the governor and important commanders were present. The sources point out that that Iranian border areas are a nest of the Mujahideen-i-Khalq, who are fighting a war against the government in Tehran. They are minority Sunnis, and they have good relations with some of the Afghan and Pakistani tribes. When the Iranian government has taken its regular crackdowns on the group, members have taken refuge in Pakistani or Afghani tribal areas.

Intelligence reports placed bin Laden in an elaborate cave complex in the Tora Bora mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

The soldier said bin Laden's captured cook had told American military officials bin Laden's exact location.

But a Special Forces team captain on the ground would not give approval to go after bin Laden because there was no specific mission order to do so, the soldier said.

While the Army was deciding what to do, Special Forces soldiers saw two Russian-made helicopters fly into the area where bin Laden was believed to be, load up passengers and fly toward Pakistan.

"I said, `There he goes,'" the soldier said.

The U.S. administration of then-president Bill Clinton had secretly spoken with the Sudanese government in 1996 on a plan to seize the Saudi dissident - who is now Washington's prime suspect in the devastating September 11th attacks on New York and the Pentagon - but let the idea go after evaluating the situation, according to U.S. officials quoted by the newspaper.

Bin Laden had been living in Sudan at the time, after being expelled from Saudi Arabia.

"Had we been able to roll up bin Laden then ... we probably never would have seen a September 11th," the newspaper quoted an unnamed U.S. government anti-terrorism official as saying.

Despite bin Laden being seen by intelligence officers as a rising threat, "The FBI did not believe we had enough evidence to indict bin Laden at that time, and therefore opposed bringing him to the United States," Samuel R. "Sandy" Berger, who was deputy national security adviser then, said to the Post.

Berger told the newspaper that the U.S. Constitution would have made it difficult to win a conviction. "Our first choice was to send him some place where justice is more 'streamlined'," he said.

The war on terror started well before Bush:

When bin Laden was fingered as the likely mastermind of the bombings of two U.S. embassies in Africa in 1998 that killed more than 200 people, Clinton switched tactics, and in August of that year, targeted bin Laden by ordering cruise missiles fired into his camps in Afghanistan. Bin Laden managed to escape that attempt, but Clinton reportedly did not give up.

In a separate report, the Washington Post said the CIA in 1999 had secretly trained and equipped around 60 agents from Pakistan's ISI intelligence agency to go into Afghanistan to assassinate bin Laden.

In return, Clinton was to lift sanctions and provide economic aid to Pakistan.

The operation was begun less than a year after the U.S. strikes on training camps in Afghanistan, along side additional covert action approved that year by Clinton for the CIA to work with Afghani and other foreign intelligence services to move against bin Laden, the Post said.

Defense officials, quoted in the article, expressed regret that the strikes had been so few and limited, saying that a serious campaign to eliminate bin Laden and al-Qaeda should have been initiated at that time, but that it was held back by many of the same concerns that are restraining President George W. Bush, such as the threat of killing innocent civilians and an inability to pinpoint bin Laden's exact location.

Between the 1998 strikes and the late 1999 commando plan, the paper quoted officials as saying that a number of opportunities had arisen to go after bin Laden, but that intelligence had never been solid enough.

The CIA's plan was aborted in October 1999, the paper quoted unnamed sources as saying, when the Pakistani government headed by prime minister Nawaz Sharif was ousted in a military coup by the current president, General Pervez Musharraf.

I believe the roots of course go back to 1979, but, I would wager a guess that after the vietnam war the CIA just rolled up tents and moved towards the Mid East in its quest to fight communism. It is well known that bin Laden has CIA roots. That is when his grand plan for world domination, global jihad and the network to fund it was set up, to fight the Soviets and the Ba'ath. The Afghani Soviet war lasted ten years ending in 89. We are talking a huge covert operation lasting ten years. Bin Laden's family built the bases in the caves. State of the art to withstand Soviet nukes. Clinton bombed them. Bin Laden understood global finance. The money washed in ... we are seeing the same players from Iran Contra ... the drug dealing is hard to overlook and certainly sensational, but, 60 billion in arms sales to Iran ... they don't just sell them hardware, they train them, sometimes in the US. Its a huge huge operation, like Vietnam became, until we have so many assets on the ground, and, the devil is thoroughly created in the press and the natives are getting pissed off enough to send some of us home in body bags, the overt case for war is made. Pearl Harbor, cut Japan off from oil forcing them to take on our fleet, know its coming and minimize the damage, but, still ...The Bay of Pigs, Kennedy didn't bite when the CIA force of ex patriots is slaughtered on the beach ... The Gulf of Tonkin, nothing to see there ... and now 9-11.

Will the US and NATO hot on the heels of Osama follow the route invented for him and the Mujahideen by the CIA in 1979?

To understand bin Laden's long-term view, it's essential to consider his Four Pillars of jihad: 1) The Arab peninsula, with all its oil wealth, and most of all, Islam's two most sacred sites - Mecca and Medina. 2) The Indus Valley, which means basically Pakistan - a technology-savvy nuclear state with an Islamic army permeated by fervent Islamists. 3) Egypt, the heart of the Muslim world, where he can draw support from Gamaa Islamiya, the organization founded by al-Qaeda's brain, Ayman al-Zawahiri, alias "The Surgeon". 4) This is the trickiest pillar: we could call it the Iranian Islamic counter-revolution, which bin Laden thinks will develop when his own Sunni Islamic revolution will be a superpower and Iranian Shi'ites will be forced to adhere to it.

In bin Laden's not-exactly-worldwide strategy (he is only interested in selected areas of the Muslim world), he concentrates his attacks on what he qualifies as rotten regimes. His mapping is extremely coherent. His intuition has shown him that all traditional Muslim monarchies - from Jordan and Morocco to Saudi Arabia - are in deep trouble. The periphery - from Pakistan to the Central Asian republics - is bordering chaos. In Iran, a counter-revolution by secular and democratic forces is taking shape around President Khatami. And Indonesia and Malaysia - the Meccas of Muslim capitalism - were battered by the 1997-8 Asian financial crisis (most Arabs still firmly believe the crisis was detonated by Jewish speculators to get rid of Suharto).

For bin Laden, Hosni Mubarak's Egypt has to implode - because Mubarak, a thug, is also a beggar: in exchange of the annual American US$2 billion pocket money, he has to maintain diplomatic relations with Israel - an arrangement that enrages the Egyptian street. Bin Laden despises the Algerian regime - whose generals are dying to get a French passport. He despises both Baath Party regimes in Iraq and Syria - because they are despised by the majority of the respective populations, Shi'ite in Iraq and Sunni in Syria. But his strategy for Iraq and Syria is completely different from Egypt's. bin Laden wants to recycle both Iraq and Syria - because for him the main enemy is Saudi Arabia. This goes some way to explain why al-Qaeda maintains a shady but arguably solid connection with the Lebanese Hezbollah - which is allied to Syria - and also a connection with a significant sector of Iraqi intelligence.

Of course, bin Laden's noire is the Saudi Arabian regime, which was born from a Bedouin revolt and was supposed to reestablish the "purity of Islam" through the ultra-conservative Wahhabi faith. But for bin Laden, the Saudi royal family boils down to a bunch of cowards and traitors. It's important to remember there is no hereditary monarchy in Islam. The only family widely respected is the Hashemite family - who are the legitimate descendants of Prophet Mohammed.

Bin Laden's resentment against the House of Saud is widely shared by the majority of the Arab population (which, by the way, is not Wahhabi). And this includes the Yemenite minority. Rounding up his strategy, bin Laden was also the first to notice how Pakistan was in danger of being absorbed - economically and socially - by regional superpower India. He understood that after the end of the Cold War, Pakistan was literally left in the cold by both its crucial allies, China and the US.

The only missing link would be to seduce the Iran of the mullahs. And that's exactly what bin Laden did. He recognized the merits of the Shi'ite Islamic revolution of 1979. But he promised much more to the mullahs: the keys to his all-embracing super-Sunni Islamic revolution, the only means to end the Iranian regime's political isolation. Bin Laden may have started his career in the anti-Soviet jihad in 1982 as an American agent - but in the 1990s he did everything in his power to convince hardline Iranian mullahs that he was not an American ally anymore. Israeli commentators and a few CIA analysts swear that he got extremely valuable help from Iraqi intelligence - but there's absolutely no evidence. At the time bin Laden was based in Khartoum, Sudan, working on subversive plots for Egypt. Sudan was pro-Iraq - and Iraq had a very imposing embassy in Khartoum. But this proves nothing.

Saddam Hussein's main strategy to rally worldwide Muslim public opinion is to emphasize his commitment to the Palestinian cause. In this context, bin Laden could not be further from Saddam. He never demonstrated any interest in Palestine. Sources in Peshawar remember how disgusted he was when in the peace negotiations in Madrid in 1992 the Palestinian spokesperson was an unveiled Christian woman, Hinane Ashraoui (nowadays she is assistant secretary to the Arab League). The Palestinians are way too "modern" for bin Laden. He firmly believes that they cannot extract anything out of the Jews because they are led by a cocktail of women, Christians, homosexuals and Marxists. In this case, bin Laden is nothing more than reproducing the ideas of his mentor, Abdullah Azzam, a Jordanian Palestinian academic killed by a massive explosion in Peshawar in 1989. Azzam was the brains behind the new ultra-hardcore wahhabis of Saudi Arabia.

Pakistan is vital to bin Laden's design. It's nobody's secret in Pakistan that President General Pervez Musharraf has virtually no clue of what his Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is up to. It's an extraordinary "revenge of history": the Pakistani army, which according to much evidence never respected civilian political power, now is constantly upstaged by an intelligence agency. But the ISI is not just an agency: it is a state within a state. Bin Laden immensely profited from the fact that in the 1980s he had two key Pashtun allies. General Hamid Gul was the architect of the Afghan anti-Soviet jihad - alongside the "moneyman", Prince Turki of Saudi Arabia. General Nasirullah Babar - today living a cozy life in Peshawar - was no one else than the man who invented the Taliban. These two generals were the real masters of Afghanistan. They were Afghans, anyway, because they belonged to prominent Pashtun families.

As the evidence collected by Western intelligence shows that al-Qaeda is directed by a sort of central committee, it's important to point out that this committee also includes high-ranking Pakistani generals, some from the ISI, and some of them Pashtun.

American pundits seem to be startled that terrorism central has moved from Afghanistan to Pakistan. Time to wake up: this is exactly what bin Laden wanted. He always knew that post-September 11 the conditions were ripe for Pakistan to explode or implode at any moment. This fits his plans for more power for the Islamist contingent (according to official Pakistani figures, around 15 million people), but most of all for the crucial ISI Islamist sectors with access to the Pakistani nuclear bomb.

Of course we are all familiar with this right? Well this is a nice little nutshell post that covers the topic. Feel free to use it if you need to quickly get people up to speed on this issue. The Senate hearings on this in 1996 confirm that this shit goes on. Terry Anderson I guess was thought by his captors to be CIA, excellent little lesson on how violence and secrecy based on INsecurity/defense actually makes us less secure. Imagine that! The Bush v. CIA battle that we are seeing now is because Bush and Cheney set up their own intelligence office, bypassing the real leaders. Chalabi distributed phony stories to the press. This was reported at the time by Knight Ridder, that some 25 fake stories were run. the Rendon a PR firm with strong CIA ties was employed by the Bush cabal to spin events and control the media. The Nick Berg video is obvious fabrication by the president's covert henchman to both silence Berg, a witness in the Moussaoui case, and, swing public opinion after the CIA brought out the Abu Grhraib photos. I could be wrong, but, I'm not. It's all so very childish. With all the resources we have we could build a peaceful stable Iraq and never fire a damnn shot. Notice too how the war in Aghanistan, itself acover for the invasion of Central Asia is never questioned, only Iraq. The lies for war started in Afghanistan, that lie was 9-11.

Need to know: Is it so hard to fathom that in the Information Age the people that control that information may be able to control what others think? Am I talking bizarre brainwashing, no. Control the money that washes through the intellegentsia, place agents there and the administration agencies and NGO's, infiltrate the clergy i.e. World Vision, infiltrate the media especially foreign correspondents ... this was effective for years. We see that breaking down now with the Internet ... if people will only read. Sounds like a tall order right., but the mandate these people have to "protect" us allows them unlimited access to any resource. Anywhere in the world at any time.

Operation Mockingbird:

Starting in the early days of the Cold War (late 40's), the CIA began a secret project called Operation Mockingbird, with the intent of buying influence behind the scenes at major media outlets and putting reporters on the CIA payroll, which has proven to be a stunning ongoing success. The CIA effort to recruit American news organizations and journalists to become spies and disseminators of propaganda, was headed up by Frank Wisner, Allen Dulles, Richard Helms, and Philip Graham (publisher of The Washington Post). Wisner had taken Graham under his wing to direct the program code-named Operation Mockingbird and both have presumably committed suicide.

Media assets will eventually include ABC, NBC, CBS, Time, Newsweek, Associated Press, United Press International (UPI), Reuters, Hearst Newspapers, Scripps-Howard, Copley News Service, etc. and 400 journalists, who have secretly carried out assignments according to documents on file at CIA headquarters, from intelligence-gathering to serving as go-betweens. The CIA had infiltrated the nation's businesses, media, and universities with tens of thousands of on-call operatives by the 1950's. CIA Director Dulles had staffed the CIA almost exclusively with Ivy League graduates, especially from Yale with figures like George Herbert Walker Bush from the "Skull and Crossbones" Society.

Many Americans still insist or persist in believing that we have a free press, while getting most of their news from state-controlled television, under the misconception that reporters are meant to serve the public. Reporters are paid employees and serve the media owners, who usually cower when challenged by advertisers or major government figures. Robert Parry reported the first breaking stories about Iran-Contra for Associated Press that were largely ignored by the press and congress, then moving to Newsweek he witnessed a retraction of a true story for political reasons. In 'Fooling America: A Talk by Robert Parry' he said, "The people who succeeded and did well were those who didn't stand up, who didn't write the big stories, who looked the other way when history was happening in front of them, and went along either consciously or just by cowardice with the deception of the American people."

Some of these journalists' relationships with the Agency were tacit; some were explicit. There was cooperation, accommodation and overlap. Journalists provided a full range of clandestine services -- from simple intelligence-gathering to serving as go-betweens with spies in Communist countries. Reporters shared their notebooks with the CIA. Editors shared their staffs. Some of the journalists were Pulitzer Prize winners, distinguished reporters who considered themselves ambassadors without portfolio for their country. Most were less exalted: foreign correspondents who found that their association with the Agency helped their work; stringers and freelancers who were as interested in the derring-do of the spy business as in filing articles; and, the smallest category, full-time CIA employees masquerading as journalists abroad. In many instances, CIA documents show, journalists were engaged to perform tasks for the CIA with the consent of the managements of America's leading news organizations.

The history of the CIA's involvement with the American press continues to be shrouded by an official policy of obfuscation and deception for the following principal reasons:

The use of journalists has been among the most productive means of intelligence-gathering employed by the CIA. Although the agency has cut back sharply on the use of reporters since 1973 (primarily as a result of pressure from the media), some journalists are still posted abroad.

Further investigation into the matter, CIA officials say, would inevitably reveal a series of embarrassing relationships in the 1950's and 1960's with some of the most powerful organizations and individuals in American journalism.

Among the executives who lent their cooperation to the Agency were William Paley of the Columbia Broadcasting System, Henry Luce of Time Inc., Arthur Hays Sulzberger of the New York Times, Barry Bingham Sr. of the Louisville Courier-Journal, and James Copley of the Copley News Services. Police think that the Marxist Leninist Communist Party (MLKP) is behind the attacks. Security forces expected activity from Al Qaeda and most security measures were taken accordingly. There are many marginal terrorist organizations in Turkey. Among them, MLKP is the one that conducts sound bomb activities the most. They conducted over 1,500 activities over the past five years. According to the first assessment by police, the bomb that exploded in Ankara was planned, but the sound bomb in Istanbul was accidentally triggered. The blast on the street near the Hilton Hotel was meant to deliver a message as Bush will be staying there during his visit to Ankara. Activities were also conducted during UK Prime Minister Blair's Ankara visit and a British bank was selected as target. The police are focused on the big demonstration to be held against NATO on Sunday. They are concerned that there may be provocative activities at the demonstration. Nearly 350 organization members, from both leftist and rightist groups, were interrogated before the Summit and the State Security Court (DGM) arrested 125 of them.

I just can't believe a bomb on a bus is a psychological attack by terrorists. These people have bombs to burn? just to spook people?

Ankara even Istanbul is under some of the heaviest security ever in the History of the whole entire world. I find it hard to believe that bombs are exploding outside the very hotel the President is to stay in just two short days from now.

What is to be done with Bush? Will we have impeachment of a president during war? Will Bush be allowed to broker a NATO/US led drive into the Mid East and North Africa, like the one the G8 announced at Sea Island? Will Bush be allowed to replace Tenet and Pavitt with the likes of Porter Goss, or Guliani? Will Bush be allowed to bring control of covert operations directly under the executive branch? I say no way.

More importantly I think there is an urgency here. Bush will not appoint a new CIA head on July 11th when Tenet leaves his post.

I believe the best option is assassination. Not only that, the first President assassinated on foreign soil. Bush becomes a hero. America mourns. The wartime President KIA in the global war on terror. The pros outweigh the cons. Bush is the perfect martyr.

American forces will practically invade Turkey. Which is great since NATO must help in Iraq, and Turkey is part of NATO:

Guerrilla warning

In the most blunt warning yet, senior officials of the two big Kurdish factions - the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and its rival, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) - have warned that if Turkish troops cross the border for any reason there will be trouble.

The KDP and PUK have run affairs in an enclave in the north of Iraq since 1991.

The KDP's peshmerga guerrillas control the border regions seen as a possible route for Turkish forces.

Kurdish guerrillas say they will protect their territory
KDP spokesman Hoshyar Zebari said: "We will oppose any Turkish military intervention. This is our decision.

"Nobody should [think] we are bluffing on this issue. This is a very serious matter. Any intervention, under whatever pretext, will lead to clashes."

BBC: Iraqi Kurds Warn Turkey

The Iraq strategy included America using bases in Turkey to attack from the North. That was the first failure. An utter and complete one. Failing to secure Turkish bases meant forming alliances with Kurdish fighters.

As part of the price for their own troops to spring off from Turkey, the Americans are believed to have agreed in principle to the Turkish demand for forces to be involved.

The Turkish foreign minister has said the intervention would be to:

Head off a potential wave of refugees

Stop the Iraqi Kurds setting up an independent state

Prevent Kurdish forces from entering the nearby Iraqi oil cities of Kirkuk and Mosul
The Kurds insist they have no intention of doing any of these things and they say that Turkish intervention would be an unnecessary violation of Iraqi sovereignty.

What are the Kurds calling for now? Exactly ... independence.

And, a key question - will the new era start with a secession crisis, some signs of which are already at hand?

While attention has remained focused on the majority Shiites in the South, the non-Arab Kurds in the north, distrustful of promises of autonomy, are threatening to kick over the traces and pull out of the new government.

Kurdish distrust of the United States is well grounded. Still remembered is 1988, when America stood by passively while Saddam Hussein's chemical attacks devastated whole villages. In 1975 President Nixon, and in 1991 the previous President Bush, fomented Kurdish uprisings against Hussein, only then to leave the Kurds to be slaughtered.

So now, having built a respectable army of their own, the Kurds seem ready to make their move. The New York Times reports that Kurds are returning en masse to homes from which they were evicted by Hussein's forces. The Arabs who occupied them are being forced into ramshackle camps. American officials are trying to stem the migration, but show no signs of halting it.

Another development that may put its mark on the region is the relationship between the Kurds and Israel, reported by Seymour Hersh in the current New Yorker magazine.

Mr. Hersh says the relationship is being expanded, with Israel establishing a significant presence on the ground in the Kurdish area. Israeli intelligence and military operatives are quietly providing training for Kurdish commando units.

There is a question whether the Kurds will try to seize the city of Kirkuk and oil reserves in the region. Turkey is expressing concern about Kurdish expansionist designs.

New Hurdles: CS Monitor

54% of Americans believe Iraq is a mistake. We are looking at an urgent situation where the fields in Kirkuk and Mosul, some of the world's richest are compromised by failed US policy, a huge failure at the State Department.

Saying its a quagmire is one thing. Describing said quagmire is another. It does not look good. Bombs and RPGs are bursting in air again in Mosul and Kirkuk. The cookie has crumbled.

Before the war:

But last year Iran brokered an agreement between the Badr Brigade (which it equips and to some extent commands) and the PUK, and the brigade has bases in PUK territory in northern Iraq. From those redoubts, it is said to be hoping to provide what one of its leaders calls “security on the ground” in certain “liberated” towns. The SCIRI is keen to have strategic towns in its possession when it comes to the grand post-Saddam bargaining for political power in Iraq.

That grand time is upon us now. I believe the best option is for Bush to be blown to bits by terrorists on foreign soil, Ankara would be a great place given what is at stake. There must be no questioning the war on terror now, not in the US and not in Europe. NATO will not be led by the likes of the current cast and crew ... 500, 000 on the streets of Italy against Bush ... can anyone argue GWB is not a liability? Can we afford to wait until next January for regime rotation? Will Bush be allowed to testify under oath, ever, under any circumstances, in a public trial of Hussein?

Disperse the army throughout the population. Disperse the weapons and ammo over a wide geographic front. Disperse the money to local tribal leaders or whomever, church groups to fuel local rebellion and decentralize command and control. Its a snake being eaten alive by ants. The Bush Booker video is again in the news and this is the first piece of evidence i examined. That is one guilty ass looking hombre in that video, and, it goes on for seven minutes. Must be excruciating.

On another note. Watch for "stability" in Saudi and Iraq. The terrorists may take a sleeper in their cells. Sudan is where I think we are headed NATO the great humanitarian operation that it is will join us. Sudan and the draft sold to the left like the Balkans.

There is no way they are going to hang Bush during war. That is my gut. Cheney maybe but not a President during war. My take on the Saudi stuff is mostly my gut, but, I don't think the Saudis if they participated knew the whole plan. They got caught here, and it was harrowing getting out. The king himself expressed concern. They were in Vegas partying and buying racehorses in KY for the most part. Atta himself seems to have been on a lark of sorts, boozing it up with lingerie models and the like. Suicide terrorist? Fundamentalist? If he was on the plane he did not crash it and he did not know the whole plan. Guys that stuff bills down strippers g strings don't martyr themselves, my humble opinion. Kurt Cobain killed himself, Gene Simmons did not. Honegger's work on the match phonecall shows that "Al-Qaeda" didn't call the shots, they didn't pick the day. The news of war games involving LIVE FLY hijackings on 9-11 speaks to high level government complicity. Hopsicker has revealed an American connection in Wally Hilliard.

9-11 has left us vulnerable to any nut case with a car bomb. How can we police the whole world? Even petty criminals could in fact be elevated to a massive threat causing global markets to react. Very stupid ploy. Our forces could be at risk of manipulation by any group to strike against another, just blow up something and blame it on your rival.

My fears are that the Saudi angle will lead us down the path of justifying more genocidal war.

We must remember we have the rule of law. People are innocent until proven guilty. Are we to export liberty and democracy and then deny people legal representation and the protections put in place to avoid inquisitions like the one going on now?

These are the big questions of the day.

"Here is what I think. CIA and Bush did 9-11. This isn't 'blowback' on us, its blowback on them, all the mujahideen that we have used to do our bidding along the old silk road and into the Balkans. They participated perhaps as Saudi's did, but, they didn't know the whole plan, they were compartmentalized. 9-11 was a huge success and we invade Afghanistan, and the Soviets can't say shit about it, except 9-11 is a joke and you know where that would get them with the American public. The interesting thing, is that the people really do have the power. The American people are a super power. They need cannon fodder and so the well contrived lie known as 'media.' Back to what I believe happened.
Everything is fine. But, Bush and Chalabi and Cheney and this office of special plans goes for Iraq against the wishes of the CIA. Or, rather, the CIA says sure, we'll plant the WMD, but, lo and behold, they do Bush Bay of Pigs style, no WMD.

This shift happened in 2002, I believe, and Rand Beers a carreer spook left the State Department in an unprecedented move to join the Kerry campaign.

Now Tenet resigns because there is a fued. Operatives from the pentagon office of special plans did Nick Berg, the CIA gave us Abu Ghraib.

They are all complicit in the big lie, 9-11 ... and ... no rational human being can believe that 9-11 is a justification to murder over ten thousand innocent civilians.
So what's next?

If it was me ... D-Day, Reagan announced dead, June 11th - July 11th is when America will mourn another President. GWB, blown to bits by terrorists in a foreign country, perhaps on a nonble brave mission to greet the troops, who knows, but, it will have to be quick. Next Spring we start the draft. Election is in November. If Bush goes how can Kerry take the mantle and force conscription too? If the shit about Bush comes out people will be over this lame ass war shit, and, we all know this rolls on. Negroponte as Ambassador, Armitage, Guliani as CIA director or worse Porter Goss, this new Alawi or whatever has CIA ties. We have the key to the Steppes Uzbekistan, the fields of Iraq, ended Oil For Food, Ended the sanctions without the UN or Saddam, billions in poppy flowers from Afghanistan. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Yemen, Morrocco, I would look along the chokepoints for shipping oil out the Gulf and through the Mediterranean, and of course the major production sites for oil.

You can see what they are telling these kids. There are terrorists in this village they have this and that weapon. These people hate us, hate freedom and are fanatics with no respect for human life. Let's face it, these kids wouldn't know a terrorist if he walked up and stuck his finger in their asses.

The draft means we all have to believe this, we will ration, neighbor reports neighbor, people being detained for their own safety like the Japanese Americans in WII.

Time will tell, but, I think the time is coming damn soon.
